Specialty coatings don’t scale off standard paint production rates — treating them like a coat of interior latex is how coating bids lose money.
Epoxy and other high-build systems
Epoxy floor systems are priced by system (build coats, broadcast media, topcoat) rather than by a single SF rate, because surface prep — grinding, shot-blasting, crack repair — often costs more than the coating material itself.
Elastomeric coatings
Elastomeric wall coatings carry higher material cost per gallon and lower spread rate than standard acrylic, and are usually specified with a minimum dry-film thickness that drives coat count. We take that off by required DFT, not assumed coat count.
Intumescent (fireproofing) coatings
Intumescent systems are priced per the UL-listed assembly and required film thickness for the fire rating specified — a scope that has to be quantified against the actual assembly detail, not a general painting allowance.
